Summer means spending plenty of time at the beach or splashing in the pool, and mostly, being exposed to a lot of air conditioning. It is no wonder then, especially during this season, that many of us encounter a spike in ear, nose and throat related ailments.
Dr. Tamer Fawzy, of The Women Hospital, throws the spotlight on the whole spectrum of ENT diseases and problems and tells us more about the state-of-the-art technology and treatment available in the hospital.
CWM: Dr. Tamer, what conditions fall under the umbrella of ENT?
Dr. TF: Apart from the more simple complaints that we see throughout the summer, there are a host of other conditions such as nasal and sinus diseases, anterior skull base diseases, tonsil and adenoid conditions, cerebrospinal fluid leak from nose and ears, ear inflammatory diseases, vertigo and balance disorders, airway obstruction, benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous) laryngeal masses, salivary gland diseases and noncancerous and cancerous head and neck lesions. Although there are key differences in the conditions, all are dealt with by our highly trained, skilled Otolaryngology Program team.
What is Otolaryngology and what can the team do?
The unique services provided cover all aspects of Otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. The program team’s knowledge and vast experience is supported by state-of-the-art technology.
The Otolaryngology Program team offers expertise in a wide range of ear, nose, and throat conditions, as mentioned above. We also cover voice preservation and rehabilitation, and provide balance maneuvers as well as vestibular training. We have a comprehensive headache diagnostic protocol which includes investigation of all areas of the head to discover the root cause.
How can you help with common issues like sinus and snoring?
We also provide the most up-to-date management of sinus disease, snoring and sleep disturbance. Diagnosis is provided in our outpatient clinic through video endoscopic examination techniques, which helps both the physician as well as the patient understand the root cause of the condition and the possible options for treatment.
In cases of sinusitis, and when the patient is indicated for surgery, we provide an advanced endoscopic procedure through a completely closed approach, without any skin incisions, suturing or postoperative nasal packing.
We also provide management for obstruction sleep apnea and snoring using radio-frequency ablation. This serves to remove the extra tissue in the palate and tonsils to open the airway during sleep. This technique provides less downtime, faster healing and less pain.
It is important to note that all our diagnostic and surgical equipment is available for both adults
