Celebrating the beginning of a new year is an exciting time, but while partying and celebrating, it’s important to keep your safety in sight. Check out our top three pitfalls of New Year’s Eve.

  1. Playing with fire

On New Year’s Eve we love to light up our skies with fireworks. Yes, we admit, it’s fun to watch but it is dangerous too. Fireworks can cause death and injuries, including burns, contusions, lacerations, and foreign objects in the eyes. Make sure to have fun while keeping your family and yourself safe through these few rules.

  • It’s not for kids. Young children can suffer injuries from sparklers so, never allow kids to play with or ignite fireworks. Instead encourage them to watch firework displays from a safe distance.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • Never, ever, point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • If it’s not ignited fully, don’t try to re-light it or to pick up it up.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishaps.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

2. Festive gatherings

Take care! Large gatherings on New Year’s Eve are fun for viruses too. We get to spend more time indoors with the windows sealed, so are more likely to breathe the same air as someone who has the flu and thus contract the virus. Also, the influenza virus is happier and transmitted more in cold, dry weather. Make sure to keep a breath of fresh air in the room, keep hands washed frequently and get your flu vaccine.

3. Family fun

Don’t be a victim of extra stress, loneliness and sad reminders of lost loved ones over the holiday period. New Year celebrations can be the way to spend time with your whole extended family and friends. You will not be just reconnecting with others, but you will also get to disconnect from the routine of your busy life.
